United Arab Emirates: Social media promotions now require an advertiser permit

Social media promotions in UAE

Both UAE nationals and foreign nationals who publish promotional content on social media must now obtain an Advertiser Permit from the UAE Media Council, even if they are not financially compensated. This requirement is particularly relevant to influencers, content creators, and digital marketers who promote third-party products or services. One key exception applies to individuals using personal accounts to promote their own businesses.

For UAE nationals and residents:
  • A one-year permit is issued, renewable annually.
  • The permit is free of charge for the first three years.
  • Applicants must also hold a valid trade license from the relevant authority for electronic media activities (as previously required).
For foreign nationals without UAE residency:
  • A three-month permit is issued, renewable as needed.
  • No free period applies.
  • Applications must be submitted through a licensed advertising or talent management agency authorized in the UAE and approved by the Media Council.
