United Kingdom’s Inflated Fine For Illegal Worker Takes Effect From February 2024
Effective from the 13th of February 2024, the UK government has announced that either hiring migrants without the required work permission or hosting migrants who lack the right to rent will be subject to the scheduled significant fine increase.
Landlords who horde migrants who do not possess the right to rent houses in the UK will be made liable to pay an enormous fine which has been increased. First-time offenders will be fined up to GBP 5,000 per lodger while second or recurring offenders will be fined up to GBP 10,000 per lodger and up to GBP 20,000 per occupier. The aim of the government is to change the behavior of crook landlords and deter them from benefiting from non-compliance presently and in the future. This is to serve as a stern warning that only individuals with a right to work in the UK can secure employment.
Businesses in the UK that for the first time employ migrants without the required work permission will be fined up to GBP 45,000 per worker. The current maximum fine for this offense is GBP 15,000. While businesses that continuously employ migrants who do not hold the required work permission will be fined up to GBP 60,000 per worker. The current fine for this offence is up to GBP 20,000.
The UK government in its effort to deter irregular migration has come up with this fine on businesses and landlords to cut down illegal workers in the UK.
Employers and Landlords have a duty to prevent illegal workers and tenants in the UK and as such carry out due checks on all intended employees or tenants.
