Canada’s New Rules for Off-Campus Work Hours: What International Students Need to Know

Update – November 18, 2024

Great news for international students in Canada! IRCC has announced a change to off-campus work hours, increasing the limit to 24 hours per week without requiring a work permit. This update is effective immediately and offers students a bit more flexibility while balancing their academic commitments.

Looking Back: April 29, 2024:
Earlier this year, IRCC confirmed that the temporary policy allowing unlimited off-campus work hours during academic sessions would end on April 30, 2024. Starting May 1, 2024, the 20-hour weekly cap for off-campus work returned—a rule that had been in place before the temporary policy was introduced.

What Changed and Why?
The updated 24-hour limit, announced for late 2024, aims to give students more earning potential while keeping education as the top priority. This adjustment also aligns with other measures, like the increased cost-of-living requirements introduced in January 2024, ensuring that students coming to Canada are better prepared financially.

These changes also emphasize that study permits are primarily for education—not as a backdoor into Canada’s labor market. Students who stop studying or switch to part-time studies lose their eligibility to work off-campus, so staying on top of your academic load is crucial.

Can You Still Work Full-Time?
Absolutely! Eligible students can still work full-time (up to 40 hours per week) during scheduled breaks, such as summer or winter holidays.

What This Means for You
The increase to 24 hours per week is a positive step for students looking to balance work and study. Remember to stay on top of your academic commitments to maintain your eligibility for off-campus work. And don’t forget—you’re here to achieve your educational goals, so make them your priority!
