Germany Ends 3-Year Fast-Track Citizenship Route

Germany has officially abolished its three-year fast-track naturalization pathway, ending an option that allowed exceptionally well-integrated foreign residents to apply for citizenship sooner.

Introduced in 2024, the fast-track route was part of broader reforms that reduced the standard residence requirement from 10 to five years and relaxed dual nationality rules. Following the recent change, five years of residence will now be the minimum requirement for all naturalization applicants.

The decision reflects Germany’s shifting political landscape. The earlier reforms were introduced under a center-right government focused on modernization and inclusion, while the current conservative majority has favoured tighter control over naturalization and immigration standards.

For foreign nationals, this means adjusting timelines and ensuring compliance with the five-year rule and existing eligibility requirements, including language proficiency, integration, and financial stability.

If you’re planning to apply for German citizenship, now is the time to reassess your eligibility and application strategy.
