New Study Permit Financial Requirements Starting September 1, 2025

New Canada study permit

If you’re planning to study in Canada, there’s an important update you need to know: effective September 1, 2025, the Canadian government is increasing the minimum financial support threshold for study permit applicants (outside Quebec). This change aims to better reflect the real cost of living in Canada and ensure international students are financially prepared during their studies.

What’s Changing?

Starting this September, all new Canada study permit applicants will be required to demonstrate higher living expense funds at the time of their application. The new minimum amount for a single applicant will be CAD 22,895, which is an increase of about 10–11% from the current requirement of CAD $20,635.

If you plan to bring family members with you, you’ll need to show additional funds to cover their living expenses as well. These amounts scale based on the number of dependents accompanying you, so it’s crucial to check the updated figures specific to your situation.

What’s Included?

It’s important to understand that this required amount is only for living expenses. You’ll still need to budget separately for:

  • Tuition fees
  • Travel costs

This change means you’ll have to prove that you already have these living funds available when you apply for your study permit.

What Counts as Canada Student Permit Proof?

To meet the new financial requirement, you can submit any of the following:

  • Recent bank statements
  • Student loan approval letters
  • Scholarship or bursary letters
  • Other valid documents showing you have the required funds

Make sure your documents are clear, current, and verifiable, as incomplete or vague financial documentation can lead to delays or even a refusal. Contact us for more information on how to apply.
