Major changes from the Government’s Immigration White Paper have come into force today, reshaping the UK’s work visa system and raising skill and salary standards.
Key Changes:
- More UK Expansion Workers: Overseas businesses can now send twice as many staff under the Global Business Mobility – UK Expansion Worker route, making it easier to establish new branches and attract investment.
- Higher Skill Thresholds: The Skilled Worker visa now requires RQF Level 6 (degree-level) roles, refocusing the route on high-skilled positions.
- Salary Increases: Minimum salary thresholds for Skilled Worker, GBM, and Scale-up routes have been raised ahead of a full review by the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC).
- Temporary Shortage List (TSL): A new, time-limited list replaces the Shortage Occupation List to address genuine short-term labour gaps.
- Adult Social Care Route Closed: New overseas applications are no longer accepted due to concerns over exploitation in the sector.
The Home Secretary has tasked the MAC with a comprehensive review of salary thresholds and the TSL, which will shape future policy.
Employers are urged to review their workforce plans and ensure compliance as these reforms take effect. The government is rolling out engagement and guidance to help businesses adapt.
