Starting January 1, 2024, adjustments will be made to the cost-of-living financial requirement for study permit applicants to better prepare international students for life in Canada. This threshold will undergo annual revisions, aligning with the approach taken in other immigration programs.
For the year 2024, a single applicant must demonstrate possession of $20,635 in addition to covering their first-year tuition and travel costs. This modification applies to new study permit applications received on or after January 1, 2024.
Furthermore, Minister Miller- The immigration Minister has provided an update on three temporary policies set to expire at the end of 2023:
- International students already in Canada and applicants who submitted a study permit application by December 7, 2023, will be permitted to work off-campus for more than 20 hours per week until April 30, 2024.
- The provision allowing international students to include online study time in the calculation of a future post-graduation work permit, as long as it constitutes less than 50% of the program of study, remains applicable for students commencing a study program before September 1, 2024.
- While the temporary policy granting an additional 18-month work permit to post-graduation work permit holders is still applicable for those with permits expiring up to December 31, 2023, this measure will not be extended further.
