Ireland: Automatic Work Rights Now Available for Eligible Partners of Employment Permit Holders

Now Available for Eligible Partners of Employment Permit Holders

As of May 15, 2024, a significant reform has been introduced for the spouses and partners of various Irish employment permit holders. Eligible partners can now work in Ireland without needing a separate employment permit. This change applies to those with a valid Stamp 3 Irish Residence Permission under the non-European Economic Area (EEA) Family Reunification Policy, marking a substantial shift in Ireland’s immigration policy.

Who Benefits from This Reform?

Individuals residing in Ireland with a valid Stamp 3 Irish Residence Permit under the non-EEA Family Reunification Policy are now eligible for automatic work rights if their spouse or partner holds one of the following:

– General Employment Permit

– Critical Skills Employment Permit

– Intra-Company Transfer Employment Permit

– Reactivation Employment Permit for any of these permit types

– Researcher on a Hosting Agreement

– Non-Consultant Hospital Doctor on a Multi-Site General Employment Permit

– Previous holder of any of the above work permits now with Stamp 4 permission

This reform is set to increase Ireland’s attractiveness to foreign workers, a critical factor for globally mobile professionals when deciding on relocation. Employers will benefit from a larger and more diverse talent pool, especially crucial in light of labor shortages impacting many parts of the world.

In summary, this new policy is a win-win for Ireland, foreign workers, and employers. It streamlines the process for eligible partners to join the workforce, enhancing Ireland’s appeal as a destination for global talent and addressing labor market needs.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to monitor the impacts of this significant policy shift.
